What is the STEM program?
STEM is an academic enrichment program to encourage talented Latinos, female and other under-represented minority and disadvantaged high school students currently enrolled in the 10th and 11th grades to pursue careers in the field of engineering, computer science, science, business managers, entrepreneurs, and mathematics.
The STEM Program is supported in part by a grant from NASA and is a collaborative initiative between the College NOW Program and the Bio-medical Engineering Program at The City College of New York, the New York City Department of Education, and the Center for the Advancement of Hispanics in Science and Engineering Education (CAHSEE).
STEM has sites in Washington, D.C. New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles.
Cost and Perks
STEM IS A FREE PROGRAM. Students who are accepted will receive FREE textbooks and public transportation. Also, breakfast and lunch will be provided free of charge for eligible students. But most important, students who successfully complete the program will receive two elective high school credits for each course.
The courses are designed to emphasize teamwork, creative hands-on experiences and critical thinking skills. Two teachers from the board of education supervise each course and a team of CCNY instructors and advanced undergraduate students majoring in engineering, science or mathematics teach the courses.
When is STEM offered?
STEM services are offered throughout the New York City Public High School Summer session.
July ? – August ? , 2005. Students participate in a six-week program of intensive course work in college-level mathematics and physics and other advanced topics as appropriate in Engineering and Science

-A Unique Classroom Program: Students learn from Engineering and Mathematics Instructors, as well as High School Teachers.
-Career Information and Development Sessions: Students are provided with exposure to Sciences and Mathematics applied to industry. As a part of these classes, representatives from major corporations and CCNY Professors make frequent visits to talk to students about the many different career choices that are available in engineering and other science-related disciplines.
-Parental Involvement: A parent and student orientation session before the program is held, in order to discuss the roles and responsibilities of parents and students
-I Information on College and Opportunities: The College Application Process, Financial Aid , Scholarships and Research opportunity workshops are provided to STEM participants
Who is eligible for STEM?
Students will be nominated and screened by sponsoring high school or school district on the basis of:
-Demonstrated Ganas - Spanish for commitment to succeed in science, engineering or mathematics;
- Successful completion of academic instruction in math and science at students grade level;
-A GPA of 80.0 or better;
-Consistent good grades in math and science if the student have less than 80.0 GPA
-Good record of school attendance; and
-Willingness to participate in different aspects of the program until graduation from high school and to
continue to be in touch with the program through college
