What is PCED?

Pre-College Engineering Day (PCED) is a one-day conference that introduces high school students to the engineering careers at the City College of New York. The conference is free of charge, and focuses on helping students develop the leadership skill needed to succeed in college, it provides them with networking opportunities and all the resources needed to begin their college endeavors.

The conference has been taking at City College since 1995 and it was created to encourage and empower high school students to pursue a college education in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. fields. The conference agenda consists of lab tours, workshops, team projects, and an engineering orientation, where students are exposed to the engineering environment.

 

PCED’S Objectives

  • Educate and empower students to pursue careers science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
  • Inform students that there are college students as well as professionals willing to mentor them in their pursuit of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers; and at the same time provide professional role models.
  • Promote leadership among college and High School students.
  • Develop networking and communication skills among High School and college students, and prepare students for a more productive educational and professional career.
  • Provide attendees with information on financial aid, scholarships, developmental summer programs, and internship opportunities.

 

Sessions

Students will participate in the following sessions.
Workshop session:
In the workshop sessions students will learn about scholarships, how to achieve a 4.0 GPA, setting goals, time management, communication skills, and women in engineering.

Lab Tours:
Students will be taken to labs where they will learn about the different engineering fields. These labs are:

Team Project:
Students will be group in teams to design an assigned engineering project in a set period of time. The design projects will be judged and prizes will be awarded to every team member. 

Engineering Orientation Session:
Information on The City College of New York, financial aid, scholarships, and other educational topics will be provided. Students have the opportunity to ask specific questions and clarify any misconceptions they may have about pursuing a career in Engineering and Technology.
